Communication Methods

1. Bluetooth

   • Disadvantages
     • Limited to around 10m
     • Custom programming may be required
     • Device needs to be paired therefore connection can be easily lost
     • Signal may be lost if there is an obstruction between the paired devices
   • Advantages
     • Controllable by any Bluetooth device
     • Cheap module can be obtained
     • High data rates possible
     • Omnidirectional (does not need line of sight and can travel a little through walls)

2. Tethered

   • Advantages
     • no worry of loss of signal
     • robot can be physically retrieved
     • minimal electronics
   • Disadvantages
     • limit of distance
     • get caught or snagged
     • Tether can add friction which can slow and even stop the robot from moving

3. Infrared

   • Advantages
     • Low cost
     • Simple controls can be used
   • Disadvantages
     • Requires line of sight to function
     • Distance is limted

4. Radio Frequency

   • Advantages
     • Long range communication for up to 1200m
     • Set up is straight forward with all the communication protocol details taken care off
     • Allows robot to be semi-autonomous
   • Disadvantages
     • Exceeds budget cost
     • Transmission frequencies can be shared
     • Excessive electronic knowledge required to make joystick

5. WIFI

   • Advantages
     • Can be controlled easily within the range of the wireless router
     • High data rates possible
   • Disadvantages
     • Added programming required
     • Expensive
