Voluntary Response Bias

  1. This is when people chosen to participate in a survey can choose whether or not to respond. This could be shown if the government put out a census, but didn’t put anything in place to make sure that people actually filled it out.

    • Convenience Sampling
      • Response by people who are convenient to ask; easy to reach. Someone created a homeowner survey but only surveyed the people in his neighborhood because they were close.
        • Bad Sampling Frame
          • The list of people that is used and is bad and does not have everyone fairly represented. Conducting a survey online is an example of a bad sampling frame because not everyone has access to the internet, so the survey wouldn’t include these people, therefore it is biased.
            • Undercoverage
              • Undercoverage is when a survey fails to include some members of a population or has a smaller representation in the sample than it has in the whole population. Example; If a survey was conducted in the U.S and they only surveyed white people
                • Nonresponse Bias
                  • When you ask the respondent a question and they don’t answer. Interviewer: “Do you like cotton candy? Respondent: “...”
                    • Response Bias
                      • When a person gives untruthful or misleading answers. If your friends are around when you’re doing a survey on how much you work out you may lie on the survey so you don’t seem like a weenie.
