network security

  1. network vulnerabilities and risks

    • malware
      • malware is short for malicious software which is an umbrella term for the forms of harmful software
    • Trojan horse
      • In computing a Trojan horse is any computer program that misleads the users of its true intent
    • worms
      • a computer worm is a standalone malware that replaces itself itself in order to spread to other computers
    • computer viruses
      • a computer virus is a type of malicious software program that when executed replicates itself by modifying other computer programs and inserting its own code
    • Denial of service
      • In computing, a denial of service attack is a cyber attack where the perpetrator seeks to make a machine or network resource unavailable
    • brute force attack
      • brute force attack is when passwords are all triggered at the same time
  2. network prevention methods

    • anti-malware
      • this is a software that prevents malware
    • firewalls
      • a firewall controls what gets in and out of the computer
    • encryption
      • this is when you put the information into a code
    • penetration testing
      • this is like a test of the safety software and is a simulated attack
    • network forensics
      • network forensics is checking the trafficking of data
    • password strength checker
      • a password strength checker is something that checks the strenght of your passwords to see how likely your are to become hacked
    • network security policies
      • A network security policy, or NSP, is a generic document that outlines rules for computer network access, determines how policies are enforced and lays out some of the basic architecture of the company security/ network security environment. The document itself is usually several pages long and written by a committee
    • user access levels
      • In computer security, general access control includes identification, authorization, authentication, access approval, and audit. A more narrow definition of access control would cover only access approval, whereby the system makes a decision to grant or reject an access request from an already authenticated subject, based on what the subject is authorised to access.
