Rosas Danst Rosas

  1. initial thoughts

    • This piece intrigues me as it makes me wonder what compelled the choreographer to create it.
    • I enjoyed the sections I looked at as it was something I have not experienced before and it made me think and wonder as to what message it was trying to portray if any at all.
  2. meaning/ interpretaions

    • Personally I feel like it could have a meaning related to the education system due to the piece being set in a school.
    • I feel that it could also be interpreted as showing the way we are all made to be the same however the canon shows that there is resistance towards this.
    • The constant repetitive nature of the piece could be interpreted as showing the repetitive patterns of our daily lives in education and how much it can restrict up as many of the movements give the appearance that the dancers are being restricted.
  3. lighting

    • For both sections the lighting gives the effect of being regular over head incandescent light bulbs which give a warm effect contrasting the overall feel of the piece.
  4. setting

    • The set is the same for both sections, but each is in a different area of the set.
    • The chair sections appears to be set in an old school cafeteria with brown tiled floors and lavender turned grey painted walls. There is a vending machine the downstage left corner of the set. Each performer has three chairs set up in a row all facing the same direction and the four performers for a diamond shaped formation.
    • The floor section appears to be set in an old classroom with the wall behind the dancers being made up of glass panels with cream divisions between them. with dark brown wooden flooring.
  5. costume

    • For both sections- Each performer wears the same thing- a blue polo shirt with one button done up which is untucked, a grey pleated skirt which comes just above the knee, black tights, white/grey socks with lace around the ankle and brown brogues
  6. sound accompaniment

    • Chair section- industrial sounds along side the performers breathing to create a constant monotonous beat which still build up in places.
    • Floor section- there is no music accompaniment the only sound is that of the performers breathing which creates the beat to which they dance.
  7. dance style

    • Modern contemporary
  8. dance actions/ dynamics/ relationships/ space

    • Key actions of the chair section: -lunge onto the left leg extending the right extending both arms out towards stage left linking fingers together and shifting body towards stage left. -extending torso and looking up with right hand holding the back of the head and the left arm from the elbow wrapped across the waist -dancers remain the diamond shape in a relatively spaced out proximity to one another.
    • Key actions of the floor section: -lots of arm and chest isolations -many held positions -dancers keep within close proximity to one another in a line
    • The floor section is very slow while the chair section is very fast yet both sections are sudden in their actions with lots of canon in both alongside many moments of absolute unison.
