  1. Family
    1. One family member addicted to drugs & alcohol means the whole family suffers.
      1. Families who have addiction problems often have other problems, including:
        1. Lack of effective communication (to spouse or to children)
          1. Poor parenting skills
            1. Poorly managed homes with no structure or discipline
              1. Ineffective role models for children (who will then grow up and repeat the same mistakes)
                1. More conflicts at home (arguing, fighting, and even physical abuse)

                  1. Children that are exposed to alcohol/drug abuse before they are 18 are statistically more likely to engage in underage alcohol use and develop an addiction.
                    1. About 43% of American adults (76 million people) have been exposed to alcoholism in the family.
                      1. An estimated 6.6 million children under 18 live in households with at least one alcoholic parent in America.

                                        1. Based on victim reports in the US, on average about 183,000 (37%) rapes and sexual assaults involve alcohol use by the offender.
