The menstrual cycle is a woman's
monthly reproductive cycle, Every
month a egg is developed in one of
the ovaries and then released, in a
process called ovulation.
There are four types of hormones
involved: FSH, LH, oestrogen and
progesterone.
FSH- the pituitary gland.
Stimulates the development of
an egg inside a follicle.
Stimulates the ovary to release
oestrogen
Oestrogen- Ovary.
Causes uterus lining to
thicken. Inhibits
production of more FSH.
Stimulates the pituitary
gland to produce LH.
LH- Pituitary gland.
Causes ovulation-
release of an egg from
an ovary.
Progesterone- Ovary.
Maintains the lining of
the uterus.
Hormones control the development of
eggs and ovulation, we can use
hormones as contraceptives, and we
can also use them in fertility treatment
to help couples to conceive a baby.
The contraceptive pill contain oestrogen and
progesterone. High levels of these hormones
inhibit the production of FSH. No FSH means
no egg develops, no ovulation and therefore
no baby.
A common cause of infertility is low levels of
FSH, so tht eggs do not mature and cannot be
released. Treatment involves taking FSH to
stimulate egg production.
it is taken orally, which is
easier and more pleasant
it is very effective- 99% of
women do not get pregnant.
it can make periods lighter
and less painful
it gives no protection against
sexual transmitted diseases
It can have side effects, such as
headaches, nausea, irregular
periods and water retention. it it
also thought to increase the risk
of deep vein thrombosis and
heat disese.
To minimise risks, modern day
pills have lower doses of
oestrogen and there is also a
progesterone pill that has even
fewer side effects and a lower
risk of heart disease.
