- The U.S sent in a form called of "Gun Boat Diplomacy". On 8
july 1853 Commodore Perry arrived for commercial
agreements.

- In March 1854 Tokugawa Shogunate agreed to Treaty of
Kanagawa which opened up two ports to U.S trade. Then the
U.S got the position most favoured of all the Nations.
- In 1858 Japan's government decided to
sign the "Treaty of Amity" and
commerce with the U.S but the imperial
court opposed.
- The imperial Court was dominated y
nationalist who wanted continuing
seclusion
