Aesthetics: The torch has a glossy red finish, which after some use has had some scratches. However, the colour is gender neutral as well as attractive to all ages and so appeals to a wider audience.
Cost: The item retails at IKEA for £4 and so is very affordable considering you will not have to purchase any batteries to go with the torch. Compared to other hand driven torches, it is in the mid-range price category.
Customer: IKEA advertises the torch as 'a fun way to teach kids about energy' so clearly the intended market is children, however the torch could easily be used by anyone who wants a torch which doesn't come with the hassle of replacing batteries.
Ergonomics/Anthropometrics: The smallest part of the torch has a diameter of around 25mm but it has a concave shape so the place where people would hold would extend to a diameter of around 40mm. Having looked at anthropometric data from http://www.ergonomics4schools.com/lzone/tools.htm the maximum grip diameter of the 50 percentile (the most common measurement) for males is 52mm, whilst it is 48mm for females. This means that the torch can easily fit in the grip of the user, which is further proven as the 5 percentile is 45mm (males), 43mm (females) and so the torch should fit comfortably in almost everyone's hands. The product is also very easy to operate with a simple on/off switch as well as a handle to power the torch.
Safety: The torch has a concave shape and so it is very hard to get cut or hurt when using the torch. It is also an LED torch, most of the energy is not wasted in the form of thermal energy and most of it is used for the intended use as light energy. This means that the torch will be very hard to burn someone as it will not become extremely hot.
Size: The torch is a portable size and could fit easily in a rucksack. However being 170mm tall, it is not the smallest torch of its kind, with plenty more that are smaller. However, it does mean that it is harder to misplace.
Function: The torch has a simple function of producing light when the handle is rotated. However, IKEA advertises it as well as 'a fun way to teach kids about energy'.
Material/Manufacture: The main body of the torch is made from ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) which can be injection molded into shape. The reflector is made from ABS as well but is metalised. Plastic could have been chosen over metal as it is cheaper although metal provides better heat dissipation for the LED, however plastics do not conduct electricity and can resist corrosion and wear.
