Definition
1. a clinical syndrome of rapid onset of focal deficits of brain function lasting more than 24 hours and is of presumed vascular origin
  1. if <24 hours:
    1. Transient ischemic attack
Types
1. Ischemic
  1. blood supply to part of the brain is decreased
    1. dysfunction of brain tissue
    2. Causes:
      1. Thrombosis
      2. Embolism
      3. Systemic hypoperfusion
      4. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis
2. Hemorrhagic
  1. bleeding
    1. Causes:
      1. Intracerebral hemorrhage
      2. Intraparenchymal hemorrhage
      3. Alterations to blood vessels of the brain
        Intracranial aneurysm
        cerebral amyloid angiopathy
        cerebral arteriovenous malformation
Management
Complications
1. may occur within 72 hours of stroke
2. cerebral edema
3. Increased ICP
4. Intracerebral hemorrhage
5. Seizures
6. Speech problems
7. hemiparesis
