                                                                1. France tried to regain it, there was a war 1946-1954, country split in two
                                                              2. South- Capitalist, US supported it, led by Ngo Dinh Diem a brutal dictator, Vietcong rebelled in south
                                                                1. North, Communist, USSR supported it, led by Ho Chi Minh, Viet minh
                                                                  1. 8 Mar 1965 US troops entered

                                                                        1. Gulf of Tonkin, North vietnam shiop fired torpedo at US ship- gave excuse for US to enter vietnam
                                                                          1. Vietnamese tactics- guerilla warfare, mass troops, didnt give in, 'hands on'
                                                                            1. US tactics- new equipment, Bombing (rolling thunder), Search and destroy
                                                                              1. US left because: Bad US army tactics, Vietnam tactics, US public opinion, Hearts and minds in vietnam
                                                                                1. US left vietnam by: Vietnamesation (pull out, increase south strength), start peace talks (Henry kissinger and Le Duc Tho, 1973 peace agreed)
                                                                                  1. Tet offensive- north vietnam attack on south
                                                                                    1. My Lai massacre- US kill civilians by 'mistake'
