Jabir bin Samurah reports he observed
Rasulullah s.a.w lean on a pillow on his left
side.
It is permissable to put the pillow on
both the right and left sides.
Left side is mentioned incidentally. Not mentioned in
other well-known narrations.
When teaching the Sahaba r.a. about sin from
among the greatest of sins, he s.a.w was leaning.
When he mentioned lies, he sat up and began
repeating till sahabah hoped he would stop.
It was repeated to show its importance
and they hoped he s.a.w would stop so
that he would not become tired.
Lies and falsehood inevitably leads one to other
sins like adultery and murder.
He s.a.w also said, "When a person lies, the angels stay
a distance of a mile away from him because of the
odour it causes in a person's mouth.
He s.a.w also said, "A Mu'min (believer) cannot be a liar."
Abu Bakr r.a. said, "Stay away from lies, because lies keep away iman."
There are two types of sins.
Minor sins forgiven after
performing wudu, salaah,
saum, Hajj etc.
Minor can become major if committed persistently
Major sins only forgiven with
sincere tauba (repentance), if
Allah wills.
Major sins mentioned in this hadith are to ascribe a false
partner to Allah, to disobey one's parents and to bear false
witness (lie).
He did not lean when he ate meals.
Leaning whilst eating is against humility and causes one to eat more. Some say eating whilst leaning
results in a large tummy and food does not digest quickly.
4 types of leaning all of which are prohibited.
1: To lean with either side of the body on the wall or a pillow.
2: To lean with the palms on the ground.
3: To sit cross-legged on a pillow.
4: To lean with the back on a large pillow or wall.
