Walden Chapter 15: Winter Animals

Walden Chapter 15: Winter Animals

1. Thoreau hears the sounds of many animals around his house during winter.

   • The hoot of the owls remind him of sadness and sorrow.
   • The foxes who search for prey at night sound like "forest demons."
   • In the morning the red squirrels scavenge for food to which Thoreau feeds them corn.

2. When Thoreau isolated himself from society, he had to rely on the company of animals.

   • He notices the different species of animals and observes their personalities.
   • He wonders if the animals have their own civilization like society does.
