chapter ten, "baker farm"
he says that he stood on a rainbow (was he feeling dazed and hallucinating ?)
he then discovers little shrines to worship Mother Nature or nature itself. they form to look like a church in the woods.
he feels immense joy being in nature alone and feeling so odd as well.
Thoreau suggests, “If he and his family would live simply, they might all go a-huckleberrying in the summer for their amusement” (Thoreau 103) acknowledging how simplicity could be the answer to the Field family’s problems.
John Field is a prime example of the men and lifestyle that Thoreau criticized in chapter 1 because he works for material gain only
Field works tirelessly for money because he won’t recognize a simple lifestyle, which requires him to be part of a constant circle of spending. Since John Field wants to eat meat, butter, and drink coffee, and tea, he must work hard for the money.
To replenish his supply he must work for the money he will by the food with and the cycle will continue endlessly. This would easily be solved if he led a simple life as Thoreau has. He must also support a family and buy clothes and pay for shelter.
