Chapter 2: Language Fundamentals

  1. Encoding Sets

    • Java uses unicode, which allows for more characters to be used than in ASCII, such as different languages
      • There are 3 different compression algorithms from unicode to ASCII: UTF-8, UTF-16, and UTF-32.
  2. Primitives

    • A non object data type variable, composed of simple information between 8 and 64 bits.
      • Includes byte, short, int, long, float, double, char and boolean.
  3. Constants

    • Variables with permanent values.
      • Declared by typing 'final' first. final int a = 15;
  4. Variables

    • A data placeholder. Needs a specified data type
      • Includes primitives, strings, etc. Declared like this: int a = 15
  5. Literals

    • Values assigned to variables, must be within the data type limit.
      • int a = 15; works. byte a = 200; does not work
  6. Separators

    • Characters which denote specific operations or sets in java.
      • Includes (), {}, [], <>, ;, :, ., and ,.
