Choices & Consequences
  1. Sometimes you aren't aware of the consequences that may come from your choices
    1. "Maybe our story will turn out differently if we take the left fork, maybe the bad things that are waiting to happen to us won't happen"

      Annotations:

      • Todd and Viola do not know what the consequences will be of their choice, therefore must make a 'blind' decision. Later on we find out that they chose the wrong, longer path which resulted in Mayor Prentiss arriving in Haven before them. From this they learn that such 'blind' choices can have detrimental consequences therefore it is important to be prepared for what those may be. This requires us to grow and be mature as a person.
      1. People immigrating from Old World to New World

        Annotations:

        • When they arrived in New World they found that it was full of a germ called Noise. This caused them to grow hatred for the native Spackle and murder most of them. This caused segregation between people as they were affected differently (mentally) by the germ. The immigrants had to learn how to cope with something foreign and unexpected as they were expecting a new start and a safe haven from everything they had left behind but instead came to a place full of unexpectednessssss.
      2. Even choices that seem small can result in huge consequences
        1. "A knife ain't just a thing, is it? It's a choice, it's something you do. A knife says yes or no, cut or not, die or don't. A knife takes a decision out of your hand and puts it in the world and it never goes back again"

          Annotations:

          • Shows Todd's realisation that even though he scolds himself for not being able to kill Aaron, murder is not a small choice with minimal consequences. Although in the town he has been brought up in most of the men believe that murder is a vital action for a boy to take before becoming a man, Todd realises that this is not true. The use of a knife has consequences that are out of your control and can never be taken back.
          1. Todd chooses his pride over letting Viola read his Ma's book NEED QUOTE

            Annotations:

            • As Todd and Viola watch Farbranch being destroyed from the hill, Todd realises how each choice he makes can have devastating consequences, no matter how small it may seem. He learns that choices need careful consideration and will not affect just his own emotions but a lot more than that.
          2. A person's choices and consequences shape who they are
            1. "Hands up, I'm taking you to my father" "the most amazing thing. The most amazing thing I ever did. I ignore him."

              Annotations:

              • Todd is standing up for himself and Viola. He is not submitting to a higher power or giving up but instead taking a stand for what he believes is right. This in turn helps him to grow and develop as a person as he realises the importance of not conforming to ways you do not agree with
              1. "AAAARON!" "I open my eyes and wait for him to come"

                Annotations:

                • This shows Todd standing up for himself and Viola instead of hiding and fearing Aaron. He is no longer submitting to his fears and letting them drown him but is instead stepping up above the waves with a willingness to face their force.
