Strength and Stability
- Loads
- Performance-how well a building provides a comfortable, safe environment for its occupants.
- Stable-when a structure can keep its balance without moving.
- Sustainability - preserving resources for future generations and minimizing the impact of construction activities on the natural environment.
- Cavity wall
- Grading materials
- Mortar
- Classified by where they will be used e.g. masonry is called G.
- Different if made in a factory or on site.
- Bricks
- Classified by how strong and how much moisture they can absorb.
- All bricks should be a minimum strength of 5N/mm².
- Concrete
- Available from 8 up to 60N/mm².
- C in front means Concrete, so C25 means concrete 25N/mm².
- If concrete is to take a load it must be at least 25N/mm².
- Reinforced Concrete has steel bars in it.
- Timber
- Available from 14 up to 70N/mm².
- C in front means Coniferous (softwood) and can be C14 up to C50.
- D in front means Deciduous (hardwood) and can be D30 up to D70.
- Hardcore
- Used to give an even base under floors and is a mix of gravel, sand, broken bricks ad crushed concrete.
- Also called aggregate it can be added to concrete.
- Classified based on size, the bigger the pieces the higher the number.
- Mortar
- Loads
Fire Resistance
- Fire resistant materials
- Plasterboard
- Concrete
- Block work
- Intumescent paint (expands with heat to be thicker and slows heat)
- Fire resistant equipment
- Refuge areas (mobility problems)
- Sprinkler systems
- Cavity wall barrier
- Fire alarms and smoke detectors
- Fire escape
- Fire resistant materials
Insulation
- Thermal
- Roof must be less than 0.20 W/m²K
- Wall must be less than 0.30 W/m²K
- Windows must be less than 2.00 W/m²K
- Floor must be less than 0.25 W/m²K
- Thermal
