Reasons for the failure of
the German Revolutions
in 1848
Peasants 1847-48
Loss of
support
Enthusiasms short lived
Slow progress made by the Frankfurt Parliment
Armies loyal to old rulers
Conservatives- enemy was
strong and better oragnised +
military power - Prussia and
Austria
Limited Revolution - active=rare, Prussia=riots ,
Baden-peoples republic quickly oppressed + little
support, not involved armed risings , peaceful
meetings demonstrations + petitions , 1848-
rulers gave in easily, wanted to regain their
powers
Revolutionary Divisons - political aims = liberals + radicals, former =
constitutional gov + all states united , other complete political and social
change , nationalist = not a united form of gov , Germany
Grossdeutschland/Kleindeutschland , Social groups different interests ,
middle-class -> afraid of social revolution as the conservatives , radical +
working class -> purely practical aims not political + not united , Karl Marx ->
apathy shown by working class
