Police Department

  1. Surveillance

    • Surveillance cameras should be on every street corner that is plugged into that areas police department. You could cut down on manning, however training is very important and the correct operation of each subsection. Drone operators would be licensed with FAA. This would fall under uniform and detective divisions. I believe most of the community would be in favor of the cameras, however I'm sure there would be some push back from certain groups (ACLU). Plate readers are just another camera but it does track certain vehicles.
    • Cameras
    • Drones
      • In the Surveillance Unit, there will be a subset focused on Drones.  This will require one tech expert and one officer to support who is certified under FAA regulations.  This group will be aligned with the Predictive policing unit.

  2. Big Data

    • The Bluetooth officer would be a great community policing tool. This would definitely show transparency. Any time an officer pulls his weapon it would indicate on a screen back at the station. The blue tooth bullet proof vest would also be a officer safety improvement. This unit could be manned by 3 to 5 officers. I would also have the officer in charge of this division require a degree in computer science.

    • Analytical tools
    • Software applications
  3. Artificial Intelligence

    • AI is great for spotting patterns and also identifying things that don't fit into that pattern. AI has been a good tool at identifying counterfeit goods which can be challenging for humans to spot. AI would be used in Financial Crimes like stolen credit cards and expense account fraud. The Police Robot would be used in situations that are to dangerous for the officer. This would be manned by five to seven officers. I think AI would be performing the work that usually ties officers up right now so it would save on manning. The community would be pleased because a lot of these crimes currently do not get the attention it deserves.
    • Criminal Identification
    • Trade Based Money Laundering
    • Police Robots
  4. Biometrics

    • This division would also be manned by few officers specifically trained in the specific software. I think this type of technology can save officers time in the field with identification of suspects. This technology can also alert officers to the area of certain individuals. I feel that the community would not be on board with and having their movements tracked by facial recognition.
    • Facial Recognitiion
      • This unit will also be aligned with the Surveillance Unit. https://www.eff.org/pages/face-recognition
    • Iris/Retina Recognition

  5. Predictive Policing

    • This area of the police department would be manned by probably five officers. These officers would require training in each category. This department will predict the police departments movements and help deter/prevent crime before it happens. I would hire certain technical analysts that could decipher algorithms. They would probably require a degree in computer science in order to manage the unit. I think as the community is concerned they would accept this unit which could help prevent crime and put officers in the areas around town where crime is happening.
    • Algorithms
    • Digitalization
      • Digital policing will make it more consistent for the public to make digital contact, improve our use of digital intelligence and evidence, and ensure we can transfer all materials in a digital format of the criminal justice system. (netmotionsoftware.com)
