Generating static electricity
- An insulating material can become electrically charged if it is rubbed with another insulating material this is static electricity the electricity stays on the material and does not move This is due the transfer of electrons
Discharging static
- A charged object can loose it's charge by becoming earthed. A person can become charged by friction between themselves and the floor if they touch pipes such as radiators the charge becomes earthed and the discharge occurs causing electrostatic shock
Problems of Static electricity
- Some places such as flour mills have extremely flammable gasses ib their atmosphere a discharge of static can cause an explosion so factories taje precautions to ensure this doesn't happen
- Static can also be dangerous anywhere where there are large quantites of charge flowing through your body
What a nuisance static can be!
- In other situations static can be a nuisance
- It can cause dirt and dust to be attracted to insulators such as television screens
- It can cause fabrics to get stuck to your skin
- It can cause dirt and dust to be attracted to insulators such as television screens
- In other situations static can be a nuisance
Higher Tier
- Charging up objects
- Static builds up when electrons which have a negative charge are rubbed off one material on to another the material that receives the electrons while the material giving up the electrons becomes positively charged due to electron loss. The atoms or molecules that become charged are then called ions
- Ways that danger of static can be reduced
- ensuring that appliances are correctly earthed
- Use insulation mats effectively
- Wearing shoes with insulation soles
- Charging up objects
