1. Winston Smith

   • Returns to his home in Victory Mansions
   • Thirty-nine years old
   • He sees an enormous poster
     • "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU"

2. WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGHT.

3. Totalitarian Political Regimen

   • Rules all of the Airstrip One
   • His life is still under tha Party's oppresive political control
   • Thought Police are known to monitor the actions of citizens
   • Ministry of Peace: wages war
   • Ministry of Plenty: Plans economic shortages
   • Ministry of Love: loathsome activities of the Party
   • Ministry of truth: where he works by altering reocrds to change the past and control it

4. His Diary

   • He begins to write in his diary
     • Although he knows that this implies an act of rebelion
   • He is sure that O'Brien in an enemy of the Party just like him
   • He knows the Tought Police will see him
     • AN THEN A KNOCK AT THE DOOR
   • Winston wrote over and over in his diary "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER"
     • This is the most unpardonable crime
