What is Domestic Abuse?
- Any act or abusive behaviour that's targeted to a family member or partner
- Usually hidden and not reported to the authorities
- Can include physical violence as well as emotional abuse / controlling behaviour
Victims
- Women are regarded as the main victims of domestic abuse
- Men are also victims of this crime, however, not to the same volume as women
- Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse- it isn't categorised by characteristics
Offenders
- Typically the dominant male in the relationship
- Usually ensure that the victim doesn't speak about what's happened- part of their controlling nature
Awareness
- Relatively high due to the amount of cases and the publication around them
- Although they have a high awareness, most cases are kept private, meaning they don't always get reported
- Victims are hesitant to report this crime out of fear of what the offender will do in retaliation
