1.1 Metals: Are oxidised and form positive ions.
1.2 Non-Metals: Are reduced and form negative ions.
2 Oxidation Number Rules
2.1 Ion: Charge on ion
2.2 Uncombined Element: 0
2.3 Combined Oxygen: -2
2.4 Combined Hydrogen: +1
2.5 Combined Fluorine: -1
2.6 If there is a roman numeral after an element name, that element has that oxidation number (e.g. In Iron(II) Chloride, Iron has an oxidation number of 2+).
