Static Electricity

  1. Caused By Friction

    • Two insulating materials rubbed together, electrons go from on to the other.
    • This leaves positive static charge on one due to lack of electrons.
    • Leaves negative static charge on one due to excess of electrons.
    • Electrically charged objects attract small neutral objects placed near them.
    • E.g. Polythene and acetate rods being rubbed with cloth duster.
  2. Only Electrons Move

    • Positive do NOT move. Postive charge is caused by electrons moving away.
    • Electrons can suddenly move creating sparks or shocks which can be dangerous..
    • Charged conductors can be safely disconnected by attaching to earth.
    • Electrons flow down the strap if charge is negative and visa versa.
  3. Opposites Attract, Like repel

    • Forces get weaker furthur away you go
    • Atoms or molecules that become charged are known as ions.
  4. Nuisance

    • Attracting Dust
      • Dust Particles are charged
      • Attracted to anything opposite charged
    • Clothing Clings & Crackles
      • Synthetic clothes dragged over each other
      • Electrons scraped off leaving static charges
