Human Relationships
1. Marriage
  1. The Marriage Ceremony
    1. Rings are exchanged - circular shape represents eternal love
    2. Vows are said - promises to each other and to God - cannot be broken
      1. "till death do us part"
    3. Hymns are sung and prayers are said to show that God is present in the relationship
  2. The Purpose of marriage
    1. To join two people who love each other
    2. To Procreate
    3. "A man must leave his mother and father and unite with his wife"
    4. It is an expectation of todays society
  3. Monks and Nuns do not marry because they don't want a distraction from God
2. Divorce
  1. Most Christians believe Divorce is wrong
  2. Ways to prevent Divorce
    1. Counselling
    2. Live separately
    3. Seek advice from God directly or look in the bible for Jesus' teachings
  3. Catholics
    1. Do not allow divorce under any circumstances
    2. Only God can end a marriage by death
    3. Some will be forgiving and will allow an annulment if the marriage vows were not official
    4. "What God has joined let no man break up"
  4. Protestants
    1. A little more lenient - will allow divorces in some cases
    2. The Golden Rule
3. Sex before marriage
  1. Seen as wrong by all Christains
    1. "Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit"
  2. Defies the point of Marriage
Medical Ethics
1. Euthanasia
  1. The assisted ending of someone's life who is suffering
  2. Active
    1. When the person suffering asks / is aware of assistance
    2. A special drink / tablets that will result in the person dying painfree
  3. Passive
    1. When the person suffering is in a medicated coma or is unable to communicate
    2. Switching off life support machines or taking away anything that is artificially keeping them alive
  4. "Thou shall not murder"
  5. Bible teaches us that life is sacred and should not be wasted - Sanctity of Life
  6. The only form of Euthanasia that is acceptable is the Doctrine of Double Effect
2. Animal Testing
  1. Most Christians do not agree - Stewardship
    1. God told us to look after everything on the earth and animals deserve to be treated with respect
    2. Animals were made from to same source as humans - torturing / killing animals is classed as murder
    3. The Garden of Eden has animals and this is a representation of God's ideal world - where animals and humans live in harmony
    4. In order to prevent it some Christians will protest outside of animal testing labs
  2. Some Christians accept it- Dominion
    1. Animals do not have a soul so don't have a special relationship with God
    2. In Genesis God said " humans rule over the fish in the sea, the birds of the air..."
    3. If testing on animals will benefit humans e.g. a new drug then God will be accepting because it was worth it
3. Abortion
  1. Most Christians do not agree
    1. "Thou shall not murder"
    4. All life is valuable to God
  2. Sometimes there is a genuine reason why abortion must be done
    1. Acceptable if the mother and baby will die during birth
  3. Protestants are pro-choice and if the mother thinks abortion is the best option then her views must be valued
  4. Jesus would have shown sympathy and would have been forgiving as he greatly admired women
4. Fertility Treatment
  1. Most Christians would disagree as it is playing God
  2. Against God's original plan - not natural
  3. "Hannah had no children for God had closed her womb"
  4. Treatments such as IVF also create spare embryos which either get used in surgery or destroyed which is again murder
    1. Can be the most loving thing to do to give a couple a child.
      1. Child will have multiple parents - unnatural and emotionally difficult
Poverty and Wealth
1. An obligation to care for the poor
  1. Everyone is God's child and everyone is your neighbour
    1. "Do unto others as you want to have done to you"
  2. "It is easier to fit a camel through the eye of a needle than to get a rich man into heaven"
2. Christians would argue that communication and travel is easy now so there is no reason why we cant help developing countries
  1. God says it is impossible to love him if you ignore the needs of others
    1. "The Love of money is the root of all evil"
3. Christians will work with charities such as Christian Aid and Tear Fund
4. Story of the poor beggar woman who gave all the money she had to the church
