Atoms and Elements

Elements
1. Some elements have ancient names and some have invented descriptive names. These names vary in different languages.
  1. Symbols are universal.
2. Elements combine to make different materials
  1. Materials are used to make objects.
3. Some elements were known in the ancient times, other elements were discovered in the Middle Ages or more recentely.
4. All the particles in an element are identical-atoms.
Atoms
1. Information about atoms is collected together in the Periodic Table.
2. Atoms can combine to make molecules.
  1. We can use molecules to visualise molecules.
Compounds
1. Two or more different atoms combine to form a compound.
  1. We use chemical names to describe compounds.
  2. A chemical formula provides a symbolic description.
Chemical Changes
1. Chemical changes are shown by chemical equation.
2. Chemical changes are different from physical changes.
