Legalised because many women were having backstreet abortions making many infertile and as many as 60 a year died as a result.
Abortion is legal if:
Two doctors agree
The point of viability: 24 weeks
Continuing the pregnancy would be a greater risk to the mother's future ability to have children
It would prevent permanent physical or psychological harm to the mother
There is a significant risk or certainty that the baby will be born with disabilities
