Legalised in 1967.
1. Legalised because many women were having backstreet abortions making many infertile and as many as 60 a year died as a result.
Abortion is legal if:
1. Two doctors agree
2. The point of viability: 24 weeks
3. Continuing the pregnancy would be a greater risk to the mother's future ability to have children
4. It would prevent permanent physical or psychological harm to the mother
5. There is a significant risk or certainty that the baby will be born with disabilities
Legal Grounds for Abortion
1. Up to 24 weeks
  1. Risk to mental health of woman
  2. Risk to physical health of woman
  3. Selective reduction of foetuses in multiple pregnancy
  4. Risk to physical health of existing children
  5. Risk to mental health of existing children
2. Up to Term
  1. Probability of grave permanent injury to woman's physical health
  2. Probability of grave permanent injury to woman's mental health
  3. Risk to life of woman
  4. Substantial risk of severe mental disability in foetus
  5. Substantial risk of severe physical disability in foetus
