1 consists of 2 cerebellar hemispheres & vermis (central area)
2 Function:
2.1 Correct voluntary muscle contraction & posture based on sensory data from body about actual movements
2.2 Sense of equilibrium
3 Cerebellar cortex & central nuclei are gray matter
4 Arbor vitae = tree of life = white matter
5 Superior, middle & inferior peduncles attach to brainstem
5.1 inferior carries sensory info from spinal cord
5.1.1 middle carries sensory fibers from cerebral cortex & basal ganglia
5.1.1.1 superior carries motor fibers that extend to motor control areas
6 May have role in cognition and language processing.
7 A deep groove known as the transverse fissure separates the cerebellum from the cerebrum
