  1. consists of 2 cerebellar hemispheres & vermis (central area)
    1. Function:
      1. Correct voluntary muscle contraction & posture based on sensory data from body about actual movements
        1. Sense of equilibrium
        2. Cerebellar cortex & central nuclei are gray matter
          1. Arbor vitae = tree of life = white matter
            1. Superior, middle & inferior peduncles attach to brainstem
              1. inferior carries sensory info from spinal cord
                1. middle carries sensory fibers from cerebral cortex & basal ganglia
                  1. superior carries motor fibers that extend to motor control areas
              2. May have role in cognition and language processing.
                1. A deep groove known as the transverse fissure separates the cerebellum from the cerebrum
