Advantages of representative democracy
Should be able to make decisions based upon a deeper understanding of the issues. We expect them to have a superior knowledge due to having the time and resources available.
Representatives are in a position to mediate between differing interests and the conflicting demands of groups in society. Difficult and controversial issues require rational thought.
Representative democracy protects the minority from the wishes of the majority. This means that the necessary decisions which are unpopular with the majority can be made.
Groups in society have many different conflicting demands which are incoherent. Representatives can convert the demands placed upon the political system into the most appropriate policy response.
