1. Promote phagocytosis and inflammation

2. Complement

   • 20 proteins in blood circulation
   • activated in cascade form
     • Form membrane attack complexes. (MAC) These make channels through the plasma membrane
     • attach to surface of bacterial cells which stimulates phagocytosis.
     • Attract immune system to site of infection and promote inflammation
   • Classical or Alternative pathway
     • alternative: - innate immunity. C3 binds with the foreign substance which attracts macrophages.
     • classical: adaptive immunity. Requires antibodies to produce antigens.

3. Interferons

   • Prevent viral infection
   • Produced by infected cell but cause the neighboring cells to produce antiviral proteins.
