Insolation from the sun is in short waves of light,the earth converts this light energy into long waves of heat energy,which is known as terrestrial radiation.
If 100 units of short waves of light or insolation hit the earth,35 units are reflected back into space by clouds, oceans and snowfields. 14 units are absorbed by gases in the atmosphere. 51 units reach the earth's surface and are absorbed by it. [35+41+51=100]
