1. CHINA'S POV

   • 1. Traditional ideology & Historical purposes
     • All powerful & legitimate imperial dynasties were established upon a unified China > fulfill traditional ideology
     • Reunification w Taiwan under CCP's terms > reinforce CCP's political prestige domestically due to the resolution of military stalemate > strengthen legitimacy
     • Taiwan is supposed to be the final piece of China's unclaimed land and is reminder of China's humiliation at the hands of the imperialist power > thus China has unquestioned right to claim Taiwan > improve political legitimacy & fulfill traditional ideology
   • 2. Present day strategic consideration
     • Wayward Taiwan w its strong ties w Japan & USA = compromising of China's strategic interest along the prosperous coastal provinces
   • OPTIONS
     • Retain the right to retake Taiwan militarily whereby Taiwan is "Legally Sanctioned" through the Anti-Seccesionist Law
     • Upholding the One China Policy which can isolate Taiwan diplomatically and to preempt int. support for Taiwanese independence movement
     • Establishment of legal and nominal framework that narrows Taiwan's political options
     • Encouragement of more frequent and broader cross-strait interaction, making the island more dependent on and vulnerable to China
     • Offer generous terms for reunification such as retaining of government etc upon reunification

   • 1. De facto political independence

   • 3. Victim og global politics
   • 4. Socio-cultural differences w mainland Chinese
