          1. Taiwan is supposed to be the final piece of China's unclaimed land and is reminder of China's humiliation at the hands of the imperialist power > thus China has unquestioned right to claim Taiwan > improve political legitimacy & fulfill traditional ideology

            1. Wayward Taiwan w its strong ties w Japan & USA = compromising of China's strategic interest along the prosperous coastal provinces
            2. OPTIONS
              1. Retain the right to retake Taiwan militarily whereby Taiwan is "Legally Sanctioned" through the Anti-Seccesionist Law
                1. Upholding the One China Policy which can isolate Taiwan diplomatically and to preempt int. support for Taiwanese independence movement
                  1. Establishment of legal and nominal framework that narrows Taiwan's political options
                    1. Encouragement of more frequent and broader cross-strait interaction, making the island more dependent on and vulnerable to China
                      1. Offer generous terms for reunification such as retaining of government etc upon reunification
