  1. the swallowing reflex

2. fine motor
  1. usually hold hands tightly closed
  2. often hold their thumbs tucked in under their fingers
3. gross motor
  1. when pulled to sitting position the head lags
  2. lie supine(with head to one side)
  3. when held up by a hand under the chest(ventral suspension), the head drops below the plane of the body, and the arms and legs are partly bent(flexion)
  4. when placed on their fronts(prone position). babies lie with the head turned to one side, the buttocks humped up and the knees tucked under the abdomen
4. sensory
  1. blink in response or movement
  2. like looking at high-contrast patterns and shapes
  3. startled by sudden noise
  4. close eyes tightly if pencil light is shined directly into them
  5. open eyes when held upright
  6. turn heads towards light and stare at bright shiny objects
  7. like to look at human faces and gaze attentively at their carers face when being fed or cuddled
EMOTIONAL
1. enjoy feeding cuddling
2. often imitate facial expressions
3. total body movement to express pleasure at bath time or feeding
COGNITIVE AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
1. make eye contact and cy indicate need
2. explore using their senses and using their own activity and movement
3. respond to high-pitched tones by moving their limbs
4. often synchronize actions with the sound of an adult voice
5. often able to imitate
