How to evaluate if a design is good?

  1. Critique

    • Feedback
      • Criticism is much easier than being generative. Criticism hold much more value than engaging in creation in this society
        • Ways in which we can ensure feedback critique is useful
          • 2-way process: Designer providing the rationale for design choice & critic responding to the judgments
          • Engage deeply: More expertise the critic has on the problem more likely the feedback will be valuable
          • Divergent and convergent: This nature of the critiques, generates ideas or points to a completely new direction. Additionally, it can also narrow down findings
      • Critiques can at times be negative to some extent. Training designers to be thick skin and give deeply honest feedback is essential to improvise on designs
        • "hamburger rule": Start with positive aspects of the design and then continue with the harsh feedback
      • Criterion for good feedback
        • Resputful & accepting
        • Collaborative
        • Grounded in design rationale & judgement
    • Socratic questioning
      • Deeply probe the designer's way of thinking and dig beneath the surface of their design
        • Questions which help achieve Socratic criticism
          • Clarification Questions
          • Questions that challenge assumptions
          • Questions that encourage alternative perspectives
          • Questions that encourage the designer to think about the implications and consequences of their design
  2. Empericalism

  3. Analysis

  4. Make absolute judgement of "good" design

    • Intutive
    • User friendly
    • Simple
    • Powerful
    • Simple
    • Novel
    • Invisible: Example Sire and Alexa
    • Universal
    • Just
