Resource summary
Digestive System.
Major parts of the digestive system.
The Oesophagus.
1. Carries food from the mouth to the Stomach.
2. Therefore it is adapted for transport rather than Digestion.
3. It is made up of a thick cell wall.
The Stomach.
1. It is a muscular sac which produces enzymes from its inner layer. It has a very acidic Ph in the stomach for digestion.
2. Its role is to store and to digest food, ESPECIALLY PROTEINS.
It uses mucus as a physical barrier for self digestion.
The Salivary Amylase stops working when the HCl in the stomach starts to work.
Small intestine
The pancreas Secretes:
-PANCREATIC JUICE
--PANCREATIC AMYLASE
-PANCREATIC MALTASE
It is used for absorption of soluble molecules into the blood.
SURFACE AREA
It is very long
On the wall of the small intestine there are small projections called VILLI. This increases Surface area.
There are increased surface area due to MICROVILLI on top of the ViILLI
The cell wall is ONE CELL THICK meaning that there is a short diffusion pathway.
