U3.2 Properties - Biometric Feature

  1. Based on something you are

    • Cannot be transferred, difficult to lose
  2. Universality

    • Every person has the biometric characteristic, so that everyone can be identified in the same way
      • Signature dynamics are not universal
  3. Uniqueness

    • Each individual in the population should be different from that of every other individual so that we can tell any two people apart.
      • Human voice not unique, imposters
  4. Stability

    • characteristic should neither change with time nor allow alteration so that you are always bound to the same set of data from the time of enrolment to death.
      • Inconsistencies in signatures limit their stability
  5. Collectability

    • be possible to measure the characteristic quantitatively so that a machine is able to accomplish automatic personal identification.
      • Ease of use, Retina Scans are difficult to aquire
  6. Performance

    • We need to assess the achievable identification accuracy of the system, its computational requirements and the social or environmental factors that affect the system
      • Face and signature have low accuracy therefore perfromance
  7. Acceptability

    • important to understand to what extent people are willing to accept the use of a specific biometric feature for cultural, religious or other reasons (hygiene/resistance to disclosure of personal data).
      • retina scan low acceptability
  8. Forgery resistance

    • Obviously we don't want to use features that can be easily forged. We need to investigate how easily we can fool the biometric system by fraudulent techniques and how resistant the system is to impersonation attacks
      • Human voice easily mimicked, certain fingerprint scanners are easy to defeat
  9. Static methods

    • Indipendant of any action on your part
      • Fingerprint, hand geometry, iris pattern
  10. Dynamic Methods

    • Require human action
      • Voice or signature
