Map content

Pigs- Extensive/ Free Range Production System

  1. Allows pigs to move around without any limits or unconfined space.

  2. Pigs find and scavenge for food themselves but the farmer may supply agricultural by products or kitchen waste.

  3. Pigs usually return to a set place in the evenings. This may be an enclosure that has been made with shelter.

  4. This enclosure is usually very small, made of sticks and has a simple roof to protect the pigs.

  5. Local breeds are best suited for this system because they have a higher resistance to disease in the area and can cope with low quality feed.

  6. Very little to no money is spent on pigs in this system for food and vet supplies.

  7. Quality is a priority as pigs are sold as a source of income.

  8. Allows pigs to mate indescrimately, allows for inbreeding which leads to poor quality and poor performing offspring.

  9. Farmers tend to sell the pigs when the demand is high as they will get more money for them.

  10. Tamworth

    • Long Snout
      • Dished Face
        • Strong Legs
          • Long Flat Back
            • Long Deep Body
    • Excellent mothers, milky, docile and protective.
    • Hardy breed can cope with rough environments.
    • Good meat producing pig.
  11. Saddleback

    • Hardy and have a high mothering capability.
    • Dished Face
      • Long Back
        • Strong Legs
    • High meat quality.
    • Docile and can cope in outdoor and organic production systems.
