Bonding
Ionic Bonding
Atoms need to loose or gain electrons to get a noble gas configuration, to do so they bond
Metals loose electrons so they get a positive charge Non-metals gain electrons so they get a negative charge
Ions are charged particles because they do not have the same number of protons and electrons.
To write formula there has to be no overall charge.
Covalent Bonding
This is when two Non-metals share electrons to obtain a noble gas configuration.
Comparing Ionic and Covalent Bonds
Oxidation and Reduction
OIL: Oxidation is lose (of electrons)
RIG: Reduction is gain (of electrons)
