U3. Multimodal Biometric Systems

  1. Several biometric technologies integrated into 1 system

    • Increases verification accuracy, reduce FMR
      • Increased Security by only granting access if user is accepted by all technologies in use
      • Higher accuracy rates for verification & identification
    • Allow a larger population to use it
      • For those users that cannot use a specific tech, an alternative is then available
    • By combining different technologies you can overcome a single technology weakness
  2. Different modes

    • Single Sensor - Same Features
      • + : Minimal increase in cost, improvement in data capture, reduction in FMR, FRR
      • - : No resistance to sensor failure or injury to biometric feature of user
      • concatenates data from multiple reads of the same feature to reduce scanning / read errors & improve data sent for feature extraction
    • Same Sensor - Multiple Features
      • - : No resistance to sensor failure, longer data capture time slows down ID&A
      • + : Minimal increase in cost, improvement in data capture, reduction in FMR, FRR
      • scans more than 1 feature, ie fingerprint reader scans more than 1 finger, improves quantity of data
    • Multiple Sensors - Same Features
      • - : Increased HW complexity, Increased challenges of integration & calibration
      • + : increase in cost of sensors, improvement in data capture, resistance to single sensor failure, larger resistance to FMR, FRR
      • Scans the same feature from different sensors. need to locate 2 sensors can cause calibration issues
    • Multiple Sensors - Multiple features
      • + : increase in cost of sensors, improvement in data capture, resistance to single sensor failure, larger resistance to FMR, FRR. Wider range of population can be included
      • - : Increased complexity, Increased challenges of integration & calibration, longer data capture time slows down ID&A
      • different sensors scanning different features, used in very high security areas
