BLM
  1. Radical Criminology - This theory states that the causes of crime are that social status gives more power to the wealthy and the politically well organized therefore leaving those who are not high in power less successful.
    1. I provided this example because the store owner stated that he could sense an “unrest spreading beyond downtown Boston and inching closer to their store”. The article states that some protestors were agitated by police. I see the politically well organized could represent the police loosley in this scenario. It is also well reported that Boston police split up the crowd and corralled them down different streets. This form of agitation and way to contain the protestors (in some of the protestors eyes could be viewed as inflaming the situation) therefore some people committed crimes due to how the well organized police controlled them

    2. Cultural Criminology - This theory looks at crime and crime control as cultural products. The mass media and other cultural symbolism shapes our idea and understanding of crime and criminals
      1. This article shows the real volume of BLM curiosity and search rates online. After some protests started throughout cities and even before the protests stated people were googling “systemic racism” and “prison abolition”. This article states that "The study found that during Black Lives Matter protests, people search for these terms up to 100 times more than they did in the weeks prior to the protests. Over time, these “spikes” in searches for terms related to Black Lives Matter have expanded to include other ideas: In the early years of the study period, searches for police shootings”. This just goes to show how much people trust the media and articles online. These websites promoting protests got countless people to get involved whether it be showing up to protests or voicing their new opinions online.

      2. Left-Realist Criminology - This theory of radical criminology points out that crime is a real social problem experienced by the lower class. Those who are in a lower socioeconomic position are way more likely to commit crimes
        1. This article provides a lot of analytical data supported by reliable sources regarding the BLM protests and movement. This article states data that shows that white people are “disproportionately” receiving higher paying jobs and better education than black citizens. Also that covid-19 had a higher impact on black families. You could argue based on these statistics that black people in America are being put at a disadvantage so therefore there’s an imbalance in ratio of races incarcerated.
