Massachusetts Correctional System

  1. DOC

    • The Department of corrections in Massachusetts manages 14 correctional facilities through out the state
      • The properties include 4 correctional centers, one correctional institution, four medium level security facilities, two hospitals, one pre release center, one treatment center, and one substance abuse center
        • The treatment center is an area for male inmates who have been convicted of sexual crimes. They are given a different rehabilitation process than their other criminal counterparts.
        • The prerelease center is as the name implies where prisoners will go when they are ready to be released. This is a housing facility, but it is not a high security center, nor do inmates stay there for extended periods
        • The correctional centers are where the inmates are housed, and ideally rehabilitated. The MCIs also will house prisoners and will aid in the rehabilitation process
        • The hospitals are utilized to both house inmates that are unwell, and rehabilitate prisoners that have been injured in the correctional centers
        • The substance abuse center is a rehab center that gives male inmates a 90 day detox. They are given opioid treatment, as well as around the clock attention if needed
  2. Juvenile Corrections

    • The DYS, Department of Youth Services, aims to build safe communities through collaborative efforts to aid in juvenile corrections. They work with adjudicated delinquents, and adjudicated offenders through the ages of 12-21.
      • The primary goal of the DYS is not to punish the criminal youth, but to mold them into what they should be, and take them out of any situation that my lead them into a life of crime, substance abuse, or self deprication.
      • They are responsible for detained youth, adjudicated youth, and overnight arrest youth.
  3. Community Corrections

    • The OCC, Office of Community Corrections, oversees the rehabilitative tools that criminals have access to. These include behavioral therapy, and a network of 18 community justice support centers
      • Aid through cognitive behavioral therapy, and discicion and substance use disorder are key elements to the OCC's day to day operations.
      • The key focus of the OCC is to rehabilitate inmates/ people at risk of being incarcerated, and allowing them the chance to return to being a functioning, and clean member of society.
