POWWOW
  1. Blue Vapor of Life

    Annotations:

    • The woman called Blue is the child of Jacquie Red Feather and Harvey and is soon adopted by a wealthy white family and lives under the name Crystal.  When she married Paul, she took on the name Blue, and she is a half-sibling with Edwin, who shares the same father with her.  She was the event coordinator for Powwow and works hard to prepare for Powwow.  When Edwin was shot and taken away, she saw Jacquie with Harvey and realized that Harvey was her father, and at the same time knew that Edwin was her half-brother.
    1. Hourglass

      Annotations:

      • When she first grew up with white rich parents, she thought she was white, but as she became conscious of her appearance in the mirror and the gaze of others, she became confused about her identity about her ancestry, and regained her sense of stability when she started working at the Oakland Indian Center.  When she was run away by Paul and she again became the host of Oakland's powwow, she was an Indian herself. She's already acknowledged her skin and faced her blood, and she's excited and excited to plan and coordinate her powwow. It felt like an hourglass was pouring in different directions that she went from white pride to identity confusion and finally gained Indian pride.
      1. First Daughter
      2. Jacquie Red Feather
        1. Past

          Annotations:

          • Brief explanation Jacquie Red Feather lived with her mother (Vicky) and sister (Opal Viola Bear Shield). When she moved to Alcatraz in 1970, many things happened to her. This is where she first encountered her drinking while she was underage and it was there that she became an alcoholic and was sexually assaulted by a boy of hers named Harvey. Later, her family leaves the island and her mother Vicky dies. She became pregnant as a result of sexual assault.
          • Characteristic Dark Negative Suffered a lot of Trauma no peace of mind no mental stability at all
          • Deep analysis It is presumed that her misfortune began because of her Indians blood. That blood brought her to Alcatraz, where she had to live in harsh conditions. Also, the group she met there were also Indians' blood who grew up in poor environments, so I think their rational decision did not work as well as normal people, and this situation seemed to have no hesitation in inappropriate behavior such as drinking alcohol at a young age, which led to sexual assault. It was a lifelong trauma for her. Also, her mother's death spurred her further into her pain. I wonder if she thought her Indians heritage was a curse to her.
          1. Present

            Annotations:

            • Brief explanation Her second daughter Jamie, committed suicide, has three children, Orvil, Lony, and Loother, and they are her grandchildren. She met Harvey in conference Alcoholic Anonymous(AA), and she still cannot forgive him. They have a daughter named Blue, and she is the organizer of Powwow. She had great affection for her grandson but was unable to raise him immediately due to her alcoholic condition. Additionally, the trauma of her daughter's suicide still large. But what was different from before was slowly overcoming it.
            1. Möbius strip

              Annotations:

              • Like a Möbius strip, her life felt as if she could not escape the shackles of evil from beginning to end.  The reality of having to bear the consequences of other people's choices felt truly pitiful, and that was the cruelty of her bloodline.  Based on her life, I think the author of Mind Map would have given up her Indian heritage and submitted to the government.
            2. Orvil Red Feather

              Annotations:

              • He is the eldest of Jacuqie's three grandchildren and the son of the Jamie.  He was also raised by Jacuqie's younger sister. To them, they are like grand aunts.  Of the three brothers, he was the most curious about Native identity and heritage.  While other brothers listen to rap and Beethoven music, he listens to powwow's music.  He planned to wear regalia and do the powwow dance on the stage in the Colosseum.
              1. Grandmother
                1. Powwow Dance

                  Annotations:

                  • For Orvil Red Feather, Powwow is a place of learning to experience and embrace Indians culture and heritage. Also, as an American native Indian, he does the powwow dance he practiced from video with wearing regalia, which gives him great satisfaction and pride in his lineage. Unlike other people, even though he has had traumatic situations (his mother's drug overdose and suicide), he does not blame his lineage, has no resentment or negative feelings, and tries to transparently accept and deeply understand the Indians heritage itself. Growing up with Opal, he grew up hearing negative comments about her American native Indians ancestry and heritage, but he believes that his personality and opinions are something he was born with.
                2. Octavio Gomez

                  Annotations:

                  • Octavio's father was killed by drugs stolen by his brother Junior and his uncle Sixto, and his mother was killed by his uncle Sixto's drunk driving.  He planned to get revenge on Sixto but failed to do it properly.  His grandmother Josefina told him that he had to learn to ignore the feeling that something was wrong.  He still did not know what to do after losing his parents.    The incident that led him to steal his first car can be seen as the beginning of his escapades.
                  1. Maleficent

                    Annotations:

                    • Maleficent is one of the characters in Disneyland.  Shee is not a villain from the beginning but is the type that was distorted by the environment.  It felt a lot like Octavio Gomez.
                  2. Tony Loneman

                    Annotations:

                    • Tony has fetal alcohol syndrome, which makes her face different from that of a normal person, and her mother is an alcoholic. Lived with her grandmother Maxine. His enormous size and scary face make most people afraid of him, and although he fails intelligence tests, his counselor Karen and his grandmother say he has potential intelligence. He had been selling marijuana since he was a child to support his grandmother, which led to him becoming involved in a powwow robbery scheme.
                    1. Mask

                      Annotations:

                      • The purpose of his powwow event was same as Octavio which is robbing powwow prize and with that plan he would wear regalia. He appreciated people seeing him for who he was when he wore Native American regalia. He wasn't actually a bad person, and his outward appearance may make him this way. His scary face and large body make him scary to others, but It was just his mask. Masks also serve the purpose of hiding our inner faces. he was trying to hide his inner soft side and altruistic side from others. The rejection of others due to aspects such as his appearance and intelligence may have been the cause of him unconsciously wearing a mask.
                    2. Twisted emtion

                      Annotations:

                      • When his father was killed by a drug dealer who stole drugs from his uncle and his mother died due to his uncle's drunk driving, he had no family to control or protect him. The only person who could lead him on a good path was his grandmother Josepina, but even that was not enough for her, and he had to deal with the bitterness alone and loneliness. Naturally, he goes down a bad path, and concept map author think this family environment is what led him to plan this terrible situation at Powwow.
                      1. First sense & Motivation

                        Annotations:

                        • For her, powwow is her grandchildren and her adopted daughter, whom she sees for the first time, and most importantly, her new motivation. She gets to see her daughter Blue with Harvey and sees her grandson at a powwow for the first time, seeing her grandson wearing Native American regalia and powwow dancing center stage. It was not simply the feeling of a grandmother seeing her grandchildren for the first time, but the first time she created a positive perception of the Indians' blood that had caused her hardships and pain. It was also a moment when she gained new motivation to overcome her by seeing her grandchildren. However, the story ended with the grandson, who was seen for the first time due to the shooting, being shot and rendered unconscious.
                        1. Quote: "We didn't have last names before they came. When they decided they needed to keep track of us, last names were given to us, just like the name 'Indian' itself was given to us"(139p)

                          Annotations:

                          • It was ironic that the heroic history of discovering a new continent was the sad history of massacres and land theft, filling a peaceful continent with blood and screams.
                          1. Powwow is an inter-tribal space and provides one of the spaces for Native Americans to come together and unite. The Big Oakland Powwow is one of the largest Powwow in America. There are also martyrdom trips by Native American Indians solely for Powwow. The central story is the scene where Opal speaks to Jacquie quting her mother Vicky that Their responsibility is to tell their stories, and they must not give up on that. In other words, the responsibility of Indians is to tell and share their stories. And the Powwow festival, where Indians from each region share their stories, is a responsibility for them and an obligation to protect their lineage.
