SMART AND MODERN MATERIALS AND ADHESIVE
  1. NEW AND SMART MATERIALS
    1. Smart materials respond to their environment and allow us to personalise products.
      1. They improve its performance without increasing its complexity
        1. Examples: Smart grease gives the closing mechanism of a CD player a beautifully smooth action.
          1. Many new materials allow existing products to be miniaturised or give us the ability to dramatically improve their performance.
            1. Optical fibres can transport light over 200km and are used in telecommunications , computers and in surgery.
            2. ADHESIVE
              1. SCHOOL ADHESIVES
                1. PVA (Polyvinyl acetate)
                  1. What is it? White, water-based adhesive.
                    1. How does it work? Soaks into surface, creating a strong bond.
                      1. No care needed.
                      2. Synthetic Resin
                        1. What is it? Waterproof adhesive
                          1. How does it work? Chemical hardening occurs when mixed with water.
                            1. Will set in water. Don't wash down the sink as it will block the pipes!
                          2. Epoxy Resin
                            1. What is it? Versatile resin adhesive
                              1. How does it work? When mixed with hardener, becomes very hard substance
                                1. No care needed
                                2. Contact Adhesive
                                  1. What is it? Solvent adhesive
                                    1. How does it work? Both surfaces are coated with this, and allowed to become touch-dry before being placed together
                                      1. Solvent fumes are dangerous! Esure good ventilation
                                      2. Solvent Cement
                                        1. What is it? Clear solvent
                                          1. How does it work? Dissolves sticky platics so they become sticky
                                            1. Solvent fumes are dangerous! Ensure good ventilation
                                            2. Latex Adhesive
                                              1. What is it? Rubber-based adhesive solution
                                                1. How does it work? Sticks together fabrics and other substances
                                                  1. Smells unpleasant but fumes are not dangerous. Some people are allergic to latex.
