METAL ORES AND METAL EXTRACTION FROM ORES
  1. ORE-is a rock that contains enough of a certain material to make it worth mining
    1. Ores that contain sulphide must be converted to metal oxide
      1. ROASTING-the metal sulphide is crushed and then heated strongly in a stream of air
        1. these reactions are highly exothermic and therefore help to reduce energy costs
          1. the also prodice S02 which contributes to acid rain
            1. S02 is also a raw material for making H2S04, which is used in fertilisers, medicines, dyes, plastic and paint
              1. H2S04 is manufactured using the contact process! 2S02 +02=2SO3 (V205 as catalyst). The S03 is absorbed in concentrated sulphuric acid (OLEUM).
                1. The Oleum is then diuluted with water to form concentrated H2S04
      2. REDUCTION OF METAL OXIDES
        1. high temperature method know as pyrometallurgy. *electrolysis of a molten compound. *chemical reduction using coke in the blast furnance.
          1. *reduction using a more reactive metal
          2. other methods use aqueous solutions which use quite low temperatures known as hydrometallurgy. *Electrolysis of aqueous solution.
            1. *Displacement of a less reactive metal using a solution of its salt using a more reactive metal
              1. C is not widely used today instead some copper ores are converted into a solution containing cu2+ ions.
                1. this is done by spraying some copper mining with dilute acid in the presence of the bacteria of thiobacuillus ferooxidants
                  1. it is very efficent as the bacteria will only work on low grades ores that contain little copper.
                    1. CU2+ + FE = FE2+ + CU. The iron seems to dissolve but copper is worth more so its okay
                      1. iron is cheap and abundant, enviromentally sounds no co is proudcued and uses much less energy.
