1 We live in a world of sights and sounds; observe and hear things around us
1.1 St Teresa and Avila offered two tests to determine whether an experience was genuine
1.1.1 Does it fit in with Christian teaching
1.1.2 Does the experience leave the individual with peace
1.1.3 Some thinkers have raised the issue of how we might prove if the experience is genuine
1.1.3.1 Physical problems/mental illness gives false perceptions
2 Visions
2.1 Muhammed's vision;
2.1.1 Vision gave Muhammed a purpose and a calling
2.1.2 'Proclaim! In the name of thy Lord and Cherisher'
2.2 St Teresa's vision;
2.2.1 Inner Vision; as described by St Teresa of Avila

2.3.1 These are not the same as seeing an external object with the eyes;

3.2 They carry authority; profound effects; need not be audible
3.2.1 However, sometimes referred to as the voice of the 'Holy Spirit'

3.3.1 'I heard the voice of a 'sing-song' child'
3.3.2 Interpretations of God's communication
