Second Language Aqustion
  1. Universal Grammer
    1. Discribed Originonally by Noam Chomsky
      1. Is the idea that all languages build upon nouns, verbs, and objectives which make up sentences. the use of these words doesn't change.
        1. In the classroom this idea is great because like in Noams video if you can help people understand the main subject and what they are doing ti becomes much easier to add to it with adjectives.
        2. The Process of Language Acqustion
          1. Discribed by Judie Haynes
            1. Several stages make up Learning a different languages and these stages are as follow: Pre Production- the stage where the student only has ~ 500 words usually tends to be very quite. Early Production- Student is slightly verbal, short phrases mostly. Speech Emergance- Simple phrases are now possible and they will more often than not be grammatically incorrect. Intermediate fluency- Mostly able to express opions and ask questions to understand the material but fluency isn't complete. Advanced Fluency- High level of profficieny around the level of there native language, these students have cognitive language skills.
              1. Understanding these stages is extremly important in the classroom they are not full proof but by understanding them we can help these students in their aqustion
              2. Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills
                1. Discribed by Jim Cummins
                  1. Is the Idea that we learn many different personal communaication skills which help us in understanding the culutre and norms of the area we are in and also help us to make friends.
                    1. In this classroom this can be extremly useful because when a student is learning the language if we can relate it to things that the student understands from everyday life we can make it much easier to understand.
                    2. The Input Hypothesis
                      1. Discribed Orginonally by Stephen Krashen
                        1. States that all people begin to learn and understand language in the same way
                          1. For example it would take pictures like the cup shown besides this and you would say the word "Ball" and then the word "bolas" which is the Spanish word for ball.
                          2. Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency
                            1. Also Discribied by Jim Cummins
                              1. These skills go along with BICS they are the higher level thinking skills. These are the things that help students make deeper connections and understandings in their lives.
                                1. Thse are the skills that we want to help our students aquire because it will help them preform and truly graps the concepts in the harder classes. I feel like all the classes should focuses on promating and devloping these in all students so that they can grow and learn more for theirselves
