Introducing the Gospel
'This is the Good News about Jesus Christ the Son Of God'
Mark believes Jesus is the messiah and God's Son
Mark believes that Jesus's story is Good news in his interpretation
Mark aims to bring hope, at a time where there, 'promised land' was taken from them.
Mark, is a believer, and wrote this for believers of potential converters
Mark's Gospel is aimed to strengthen and deepen faith and commitment
Giving him the title of Son Of God shows Jesus's authority
'Good News' is what a Gospel is. Gospels have a particular purpose
Background Info
Promised Land
Palestine was known as the 'Promised Land'
It comes from the old testament and was promised to Abraham
The Jew's had a covenant (scared binding between God and human beings)
Roman Occupation
Took Palestine in 63BC
The 'Puppet King' Herod the great was the ruler
The Roman Emperor was really in charge and Herod was unpopular for this
The Temple and Synagogue
The First temple was built during the reign of Solomon around 970BC
Herod was responsible for Jesus's temple it was finished in 64BC and destroyed in 70AD
Synagogue means 'meeting' or 'assembly'
It becomes the main place of worship after the temple is destroyed
Religious people
Sadducees
Sadducee means 'Son of Zadok'
They control worship in the temple and sacrifices
They believe the Torah (Jewish law) contains all Jesus's teachings
Jesus was a threat, he claimed he was the Messiah but they did not believe
Pharisees
Pharisees means 'Separated Ones'
They worship at the local synagogues
They kept the Law Of Moses and believed God would send a Messiah
Scribes
Scribes were known as 'Teachers of the Law'
Some Scribes were also Pharisees they added new laws called 'Oral Law'
They copied scriptures but soon starting editing them.
Jesus threatened their laws and believed they abused their position

A Spirit Came Down On Him Like A Dove

The Man with Leprosy
The man begged Jesus to help him
'If you want to' .'You can make me clean'
The man has faith in Jesus to cure him
As an outcast he is unsure 'If you want to'
Jesus touched him 'I do want to'
Nobody touched a man with Leprosy
'Don't tell anyone about this. But go straight to the priest and let him examine you'
The priest has the authority to declare someone clear
'Offer the sacrifice that Moses offered
Leprrosy

People can die as a result
A disease of the skin those who had it where outcasts

Follow the example of Jesus and help those in Africa with Leprosy
Aims to stop Leprosy and Discrimination against it
in a way they are his disciples, who have learned from Jesus Christ
The Paralyzed Man
The news spread that Jesus would be in Capernaum
Popularity
Building followers
They were out of the door and Jesus was preaching to them, when four men turned up
They had a paralyzed man but couldn't get him Jesus
They made a hole in the roof and lowered him to Jesus
Their Faith is rewarded
'My son, you sins are forgiven'
Some teachers thought (Pharisees) 'How dare he talk like this. This is blasphemy' only god can forgive sins
Angry at Jesus
Embarrassed
'Whys say such things. Is it easier to say to this paralyzed man.' 'Your sins are forgiven or Get up pick up your mat and walk.'
Tension with the authorities
Jesus says he will show them the Son of Man has authority. The paralyzed man does what Jesus says and they were all amazed
Call of Levi and Eating with Sinners
Starts teaching the crowd
He saw a tax collector Levi
'Follow us' Levi got up and followed Jesus
Hated
Jews had to pay poll tax to Rome
Taxed for there produce
Were traitors to the Jews
Jesus later was having a meal at Levi's house
Many joined him and his disciples at the table
They (authorities) asked the disciples 'Why does he each with such people?'
'People who are well do not need a doctor, but only those who are sick. I have not come to call respectable people outcasts'
The Man with the Paralyzed Hand
Went to the synagogue and found a man with a paralyzed hand
Some people there wanted to accuse Jesus of doing wrong. They wanted to see if he would heal on the Sabbath
'Come up with me to the front. What does our law allow us to do on the Sabbath? To help or to harm? To save someone's life or to destroy it' Silence
So letter to the law that they dont care about what's going on around them
Jesus felt sorry for them because they were so stubborn and wrong.
He stretched out his hand he healed it. The Pharisees left the synagogue and made a plan to kill Jesus

Division between societies people and the religious leaders
