Issues that impacted Earth
  1. Water Quality
    1. what is it?
      1. water quality refers to the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of water.
        1. Causes/effects
          1. Excess Nutrients (eutrophication):some wastewater, sewage, and rainwater runoff can contain high concentrations of nutrients. When this enters bodies of water this can start the process of eutrophication. This ultimately results in a 'dead zone'. Affecting not only marine ecosystems but the water quality.
            1. solution: Eutrophication is something that is difficult to prevent because some nutrients occur naturally in the environment so when trying to limit compounds like phosphate and nitrate it becomes challenging. But we can stop the external exposure. Composting is a beneficial alternate to ferilizers. Even when it is broken down and enters bodies of water it will not start the horrifying effects like fertilizer would with its several compound ingredients. Also if big manufacturing companies lowered the amount of pollution they let into the air and the ground their wouldn't be toxins that would run off into bodies of water with rainfall. Not only that but polluting the air with acidic emissions results in acid rain which just further taints the bodies of water. Elimination of phosphorus in detergents would reduce by aprox. 50% of phosphorus entering some lakes. There are also other methods like algae filtration, and ultrasonic irradiation.
              1. These processes to isolate algae and form a precipitate are all effective but require some planning and investment. The benefit of removing algae like this is once the lipids are removed it can be used to generate biomass or bio-fuel production.
            2. Mining: mining: Extracting elements in their raw form from the ground can release many toxins and chemicals into the water. This can cause serious heath problems and pollute the body of water.
              1. Solution: we have already harmed, polluted and destroyed Earth enough. But we fail to apprehend that and continue with our destructive lifestyles. We now must find alternate energy sources so we can stop mining activities. Alternate energy sources like wind, hydro, solar, tidal are all arising ideas that it is time to take advantage of so we can stop affecting the envoirment by mining for elements in order to make energy.
              2. Marine dumping: some countries dispose their garbage such as, aluminum, glass, plastic, paper, rubber, and food into the bodies of water that surround them. These items may take 2 weeks to 200 years to decompose. Not only is this heavily corrupts the water quality but also harms the marine animals.
                1. solution: Its hard to clean up pollution once its occurred, so prevention is the solution to this. Rather then those countries dumping their waste they can use a method called Biomass. By burning your waste your not only disposing the garbage but also efficiently creating energy.
