    1. Exercise – Planned or structured physical activity requiring physical effort, aimed at improving health and fitness.
      1. Healthy balanced lifestyles – day-to-day life that has equilibrium, quality and wellness and which includes exercise, nutritious diet, injury and illness prevention, rest, sleep, hobbies, personal hygiene, control of stress and relationships.
        1. Lifetime sport – activities that can be enjoyed over the course of a lifetime e.g. table tennis or badminton
          1. Lifelong physical activity – enjoyable, health enhancing movement that is sustained throughout life e.g. Pilates or yoga
          2. Benefits
            1. Physical – Improved fitness, reduced risk of CHD, reduced risk of osteoporosis, decrease blood pressure, greater life expectancy
              1. Personal – enjoyment, increase confidence, improve leadership skills
                1. Emotional - Reduced stress levels, relieve anxiety, improve academic performance
                  1. Social – make friends, improve team work, improve communication
                  2. Factors contributing to a sedentary lifestyle
                    1. Work in Britain has changed from manual labourers to desk bound jobs
                      1. Longer working hours
                        1. Widespread use of cars.
                          1. More people watch sport rather than play
                            1. Increased reliance on technology e.g. computers for internet shopping and games
                            2. Recommended levels of participation in physical activity
                              1. Adults
                                1. At least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least 5 days a week
                                2. Children
                                  1. 60 minutes of moderate physical activity each day.
                                3. Barriers to participation
                                  1. Being in a minority group e.g. women, disabled, ethnic minority e.g. asian women and swimming clothing restrictions
                                    1. Don’t enjoy exercise, don’t like getting hot and sweaty
                                      1. Lack of time e.g. studying or part time job
                                        1. Bad (school) experience
                                          1. Lack of role models friends / peer pressure
                                            1. Not enough money / withdrawal of Government funding e.g. withdrawal of free swimming for young people
                                              1. Poor health e.g. asthma
                                                1. Tired / can’t be bothered
                                                  1. Limited provision
                                                    1. Lack of equipment or facilities eg no swimming pool nearby
                                                      1. No transport
                                                        1. Unfavourable weather
                                                          1. Low self esteem, lack of confidence self-conscious, poor body image
