Structured Interviews
  1. A structured interview is a face to face survey; using set questions.
    1. They collect quantitative data so are favoured by positivists
      1. Advantages
        1. Can collet more complex and detailed data than postal questionnaires
          1. Reach a wider range of respondents (overcome literacy problem)
            1. Have improved response rate (70-80%)
              1. Quick to do (as not dependent on postal return)
                1. Greater flexibility in asking (and answering) of questions
                  1. Individual attention can be given to help respondents (explain/repear questions)
                    1. Can be used with all sections of the population (more representative)
                      1. Interviewer presence can make answering questions more interesting for respondent
                        1. Fewer 'dont know' responses when face to face
                        2. Disadvantages
                          1. Very costly
                            1. Time consuming
                              1. Need to train interviewees
                                1. Interview situation is always artificial
                                  1. Wages for interviewees
                                    1. Interviewees can sometimes forget/misinterpret a response
                                      1. Face to face interaction may influence respondents
                                        1. The emotional state of the interviewee could affect their response
                                          1. What people say and do are not always the same (validity issue)
                                            1. Only gain a 'snapshot' of population at a certain time
