The Skeletal System
  1. Is made up of two parts
    1. The Axial Skeleton
      1. which consists of 80 bones along the midline of the body.
      2. The Appendeciular
        1. which consists of 126 bones that make up our limbs.
          1. Bones themselves are categorized into five groups called
            1. the Long Bone
              1. an example being the humerus or femur.
              2. the Short Bone
                1. Such as our fingers (phalanges).
                2. the Sesamoid Bone
                  1. like our knee cap aka Patella.
                  2. the Irregular Bone
                    1. such as those that make up our spine.
                    2. the Flat Bone
                      1. which is the type of bone our skulls are.
                      2. But what allows bones to move when muscles pull on them?
                        1. They move because of Joints. Humans have three types called:
                          1. Fibrous
                            1. which are unable to move.
                            2. Cartilagenous
                              1. Allow for slight movement, found within the spine.
                              2. Synovial; which there are six kinds of.
                                1. Hinge Joint
                                  1. an example of this would be the elbow (the humerus and ulna)
                                  2. Ball and Socket joint
                                    1. an example of this would be the hip or shoulder joints
                                    2. Gliding joint
                                      1. which are found within the tarsals and carpals, in our feet and hands.
                                      2. Pivot joint
                                        1. an example of this would be the joint between the atlas and axis.
                                        2. Saddle Joint
                                          1. which is found in the thumb
                                          2. Ellipsoid joint
                                            1. which is found in the wrist
                              3. What are the types of injuries that can happen to the skeletal system?
                                1. Bones experience fractures which are divided into three types called:
                                  1. Simple fractures
                                    1. these are breaks on the surface of the bone while it is intact.
                                      1. an example would be stress fractures (over repeated use) or hairline fractures.
                                    2. Compound fractures
                                      1. these happen when the bone is split into two pieces.
                                        1. for example breaking your femur in half.
                                      2. Comminuted fractures
                                        1. which occur when the bone, or a part, is shattered.
                                          1. this happens commonly during major car accidents.
                                        2. Bones are also prone to disease such as osteoporosis.
                                          1. This is a degenerative condition that causes bones to become fragile and brittle.
                                            1. Women are more prone to this then men are but
                                              1. it can be combated with a balanced diet rich in calcium, weight bearing exercise, a healthy lifestyle (no smoking etc.).
                                        3. Joints experience different types of injuries called:
                                          1. Cartilage Damage.
                                            1. Cartilage is what reduces the damage bones would take while they move in their joints.
                                              1. This begins to wear out over our life span, but can also happen quickly causing sharp pains within the joint.
                                            2. Sprains.
                                              1. This occurs when the ligaments holding bones are overstretched.
                                                1. First degree means that only a few fibres were overstretched.
                                                  1. Second degree means some fibres in the ligament tore.
                                                    1. Third degree means the ligament is almost completely torn.
                                                  2. Dislocations and Seperations.
                                                    1. Dislocations occur when a bone leaves its joint.
                                                      1. Seperations occur when ligaments holding bones together are torn.
                                                  3. How do muscles attach to bone?
                                                    1. Muscles attach on bones by way of tendons or attaching to the surface of the bone. Not to be confused with ligaments which hold bones together
                                                      1. The place where a muscle attaches to the bone is known as a landmark
